Question: Brandi, I go to a lot of networking events each week and I get stuck in the same old “what do you do?” conversation. My business is service based and offers a variety of different services depending on the customers needs. How do I tailor my message so that it reaches the potential client and gets them to be interested without giving them too much information and overwhelming them? We’ve completed our Back to Business blog series, short a few businesses who were unable to participate but what a lineup of 17 truly amazing B2B businesses. I’d like to personally thank each and every small business owner who participated for the opportunity to get to know them and their business just a little bit better. I’ve made some connections through this process that will extend far beyond this blog series.
If you recall, each business owner that was interested in being interviewed was asked to submit a 50 word pitch to demonstrate how my readers could benefit from learning more about their business. The requirement for entry seemed easy, but as many of these entrepreneurs quickly found pitching your business in a concise and persuasive manner can be challenging.
It is ‘mission critical’ that you are able to effectively articulate not only what your business does but how prospective customers can benefit. What pain points are you solving for? What quantifiable results can your product or service achieve? It is also important to be able to do so concisely. You don’t always have a lot of time to go into depth about your business so you have to peak the listeners interest quickly.
I chose 50 words for two reasons. First you can verbally give your 50 word pitch in approximately 30 seconds making it a perfect answer to the usual “so what do you do?” question that gets asked at networking events and leaving at least a minute to converse in an elevator. Secondly, 50 words is in most cases 350 characters or less making it ideal for most online profiles or for use in article or press release footers.
This was more than a requirement to be selected for an interview; it was an exercise in effectively selling your business. How good is your pitch? Can you articulate what you do, how it benefits your clients, and what makes you different in 50 words or less?

When attending networking events it is important to be remembered. As I prepared to attend a local networking event on Wednesday I shared a 60 Second #BlueTip on having business cards designed for networking that help you to stand out from the crowd.
I got lots of compliments on my cards at the event, and several attendees interested in having me design unique cards to market thier businesses and promote their brand. So how do you like my networking business cards? Pretty snazzy huh?
And no stand out business card is complete without an equally unique business card holder. Custom made by Bizzie Lizzie Creations who did an absolute fabulous job. If you have never seen her line of custom handbags and accessories make sure to check out her Etsy store!
